When Art Is Censored
"Why don't you major in art?" a Bahraini artist asked me many years ago. I was a high-school student back then. I participated in a drawing competition and was called for an interview to talk about my work. I didn't know what to answer. "Art wouldn't not do for a living," was my reply. I was right, practically speaking. But I knew for a certainty that I was also wrong, since art, the noblest form of human activity, is what gives life its astonishing, loud, funny, obscene and outrageous quality. It breathes life into life, and resurrects the dead from their eternal slumber.
